I
Am So Happy -- Part 1

Do
you come across a situation and instantly decide you're not happy
with what's going on? . . .
Do
you get invited somewhere, you get there and it's not at all what
you expected, so you decide you don't like it?
Do
you get presents and they aren't what you wanted, so you decide
you don't like them?
We
make these judgements, and many others, without considering what
they are saying about us as a person. We look at something and
if it's not what we are used to, sometimes we make a judgement
call -- sometimes it's a judgment call we wish we would have kept
to ourselves. We know our reaction shows on our faces, but we
can't help it. Especially with thoughts like: "It's not my
fault, I'm not the one who got us in this situation." "I
didn't want to come to this party in the first place!" "I
hate green. This dress/tie/gift is GREEN."
We're
not going to pretend . . . no matter how much effort someone has
put into getting this for us, taking us somewhere, showing us
what they perceive as a good time.
And
you know what? Most of the time, when all is said and done, these
thoughts and actions make us miserable. Afterwards, when we think
about it, we are are even more miserable. We should have been
more prepared to be generous with those that are only trying to
please us. I mean, really, aren't there times when we wish we
could just be happy for their sake and get on with our lives?
What
can we do about it without messing with our integrity and their
well-meaning?
Here
is something my clients have found to be tremendously helpful.
"I
am so happy . . ."
Every
evening before you go to bed, get out a tablet and a pencil and
fill a page with "I am so happy I am . . ., or I have . .
. or I did . . ." Look back on your day and find things to
be happy about. It could be something that happened that day,
something someone said, something someone did for you, whatever.
Think
about something that makes you feel really good. Now, you can
be flexible. If nothing happened that day to make you happy, think
about something that you are just plain happy about. When you
are thinking about it, think "I am so happy . . ." and
end the sentence with what you are happy about. Now, realize that
you are programming yourself, and when you program yourself, your
emotions are a big key. That's why it's important that you have
good, clean happiness about what you are thinking when you say
and write down, "I am so happy . . ."
Now,
after a week or so, you will find that when you just start saying
or thinking the words "I am so happy . . .", you will
feel a smile coming. And that is great!
