My name is Jan Tincher, and I am a Hypnotherapist and Master Neuro-Linguistic Programmer here in Forest City, Iowa. I've had a great practice for over thirteen years and I've always enjoyed helping people. I have a successful ezine, two members-only web sites, and several other web sites in the making. That's how I am now. It wasn't always that way.

When my daughter was a teenager, we had lots of problems. That was about the time I read Anthony Robbins' book *Unlimited Power.* I found an 800 telephone number for Robbins Research, and since I had a problem, it seemed the right thing to do, so I called. I talked to a wonderful man, I believe his name was Corey. We had several discussions. I'll share one that I remember explicitly that may help you.

I was sitting at my desk, crying. In one hand, I held a soaked Kleenex, the other the telephone. I could hardly talk. He said, "What do you see?"

I said, "I see my daughter walking out of the house with her suitcase." She was a junior in high school, and we had had a terrible fight. It was a culmination of a terrible week. We couldn't communicate, she didn't feel loved or wanted, and nothing I said or did could change that. She was never coming back.

"What do you see?" he repeated, knowing that we had already talked about how powerful our minds AND our imaginations are. I had yet to learn it personally.

I couldn't see the relevance there. What I saw was reality, what he was encouraging me to see didn't have a bearing on *my* problem as far as I was concerned. Little did I know.

I was quite stubborn. No one was going to tell me *seeing* something differently was going to change or help the situation *I* was in.

My mind relived the scenario that had just happened. I found myself upstairs, nose against the window, watching as she walked down the block, away from her home. I couldn't stop crying. I hated myself. I felt useless, hopeless. I didn't know when I'd see her again, I just knew she was leaving and wasn't coming back.

I told this wonderful, patient man what I saw! I wanted him to get it through his head that this was *reality!* No *seeing* anything else was going to help, much less change things.

"I *see* my daughter walking out of the house with her suitcase!" I was shouting as loud as one could between sobs. Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes, even though we have a beautiful relationship now.

He was very patient, reminding me of other things we had talked about, about how our minds do affect our lives. Finally, he asked again -- very calmly, "What do you see?"

I sniffed, defeated.

I knew what he wanted. I might just as well try it his way. My way certainly wasn't working. I was quiet for a moment as I catalogued all the possible scenarios running through my mind. Some were so bad, I couldn't stand it. It really was better to see the good. "I see her coming home."

"When?"

Sniff. "Tonight."

"I'll see that with you," he said.

She came home that night.

Yes, we still have our *times,* but that was the beginning of a lesson I was not soon to forget. I knew we would continue to have problems, but I was determined to break the *chain.* I was going to do everything in my power to help her learn what I was learning, to help her realize that the past does not make the future, that she could change. That we all could change.

I am watching as she works with her own children. I am seeing some beautiful things happening. I see old patterns too, but I know we all grow at our own speed. I am here for her when she needs me. I see her blossoming, as I see her encouraging her son and daughter to blossom. And I think, "Life is wonderful!"

And so it is.

So. That's how I started in my profession. Our daughter graduated in 1988, and I continued reading Anthony Robbins books and listening to his tapes. *Unlimited Power* is dog-eared, and *Awaken The Giant Within* is tabbed with so many post-its it is abnormally thick. Finally, I was able to go to California and certify as a Hypnotherapist and Master Neuro-Linguistic Programmer in 1990-91. I studied under Anthony Robbins, then I certified under his teacher, Richard Bandler. I continue to learn every day how my mind affects my life. I strive toward success in that area, and I do my best to pass on what I have learned to others.

If you have family problems, do what you can to break the *chain.* Don't pass on what you were, pass on what you are striving to be.

I know this doesn't seem to address the problems of stress, but think about it for a minute. What are you seeing in your life? What is your reality? Can you change it? I did.

Thanks for reading.
